## Ecosystem Activity

### Communities

Ongoing founder, technical, and creative groups with regular meetups, shared spaces, or active member channels.

Lisbon brings local founders, returning Portuguese operators and international teams into the same rooms. The useful question is who is there year-round. Start with recurring communities and workspaces, then use conference weeks to widen the network.

Local tips:
- Startup Grind Lisbon and Portuguese Women in Tech are direct community entry points
- Use the Work Bases card for Heden and Factory Lisbon rather than treating coworking as the whole community
- The mix of locals, returnees, and internationals is the real community advantage

## Daily Life

### Work Bases

Laptop-friendly cafes, coworking spaces, labs, and repeat work bases for getting out of the apartment and into the local builder rhythm.

Lisbon's specialty coffee and coworking scene has grown quickly. Chiado, Príncipe Real, Santos, and Alcântara are easy starting points.

Local tips:
- Check Heden, Factory Lisbon, and Impact Hub for workspace access
- Use Café zum Arbeiten to pre-check laptop-friendly cafes before planning deep work
- Chiado, Príncipe Real, Santos, and Alcântara are useful first neighborhoods to test

### Transit and Travel

Getting around cities and across Europe.

Lisbon has metro, trams, buses, ferries, and suburban trains. The hills make walking harder than the map suggests, so transit and neighborhood choice matter.

Local tips:
- Navegante is the monthly-pass system to understand first
- Tram 28 is iconic but packed with tourists — take it once for fun, not for commuting
- Ferries to the south bank are part of normal city movement, not just sightseeing

Resources:
- [Metropolitano de Lisboa – Metro routes and tickets](https://www.metrolisboa.pt/en/) — (Scope: Lisbon; Checked: Sep 8, 2026)

### Food and Delivery

Save money, eat well, and discover local food culture.

Lisbon's food rhythm is simple to love: seafood, tascas, bakeries, markets, and neighborhood pastelarias. Daily eating can still feel generous if you avoid the tourist loop.

Local tips:
- Time Out Market is tourist-heavy but still practical for a first pass
- Local tascas are the better daily-life default than the tourist food loop
- Pastéis de Belém for the original pastéis de nata; any neighborhood pastelaria for the daily version

Resources:
- [Visit Lisboa – Restaurants and cafes](https://www.visitlisboa.com/en/places?q%5Bcategories_id_in%5D%5B%5D=6) — Official tourism-board restaurant directory. Filter by area, cuisine and price range. (Scope: Lisbon; Checked: Sep 8, 2026)

### Culture and Lifestyle

City guides, expat resources, and cost of living tools.

Lisbon's culture is less museum-heavy than Paris or London, but daily life carries a lot of it: viewpoints, tiles, fado, markets, ferries, beaches, and short train trips.

Local tips:
- Miradouros (viewpoints) are free and scattered across the city — Graça and Alfama have the best
- Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and Torre de Belém are UNESCO World Heritage sites
- Sintra, Cascais, and Costa da Caparica are the obvious day trips; test transit times before promising yourself a beach routine

## Build, Fund, and Work

### Programs

Local-first accelerators, incubators, venture builders, and programs worth checking before you apply anywhere broad.

Lisbon's program scene is stronger than the city's size suggests, but it is easier to navigate through current incubator and government-program links than old event lore.

Local tips:
- BGI and Build Up Labs are the first local program links to compare
- Startup Lisboa, Unicorn Factory Lisboa, and Beta-i cover the city-backed, soft-landing, and open-innovation routes
- Startup Portugal is the official program and funding map to keep nearby

Resources:
- [Unicorn Factory Lisboa – Incubation, scale-up, and soft-landing platform](https://unicornfactorylisboa.com/) — Lisbon entry point for Startup Lisboa incubation, scale-up support and founder soft landing. Programmes have participation fees; incubation accepts tested projects and early-stage startups, not an untested idea alone. (Scope: Lisbon; Checked: Sep 8, 2026)

### Fundraising

Start with the local funding context here, then use Capital for the broader Europe-wide search.

Portuguese VC is smaller than Western Europe's main hubs, so Lisbon founders often combine local funds with London, Paris, Berlin, or remote investor networks.

Local tips:
- Use Dealroom and OpenVC to map investors before outreach
- Use EBAN to understand the angel-network layer, then verify activity through current rounds and warm intros
- Treat Portuguese angel-tax incentives as official-source territory before using them in a fundraising conversation

Resources:
- [OpenVC – Investor database and fundraising workflow tools](https://www.openvc.app/) — (Scope: All cities; Checked: Sep 8, 2026)
- [Seedtable – Investor database](https://seedtable.com/investors) — Global investor directory with stage and location filters. Broader access requires an account, and combined filters are paid; confirm each fund's current activity. (Scope: All cities; Checked: Sep 8, 2026)

### Jobs

Local startup boards first, then broader hiring routes and operator paths when the city list is too narrow.

Lisbon's tech job market is growing. Compare local salaries with housing costs and remote offers; a lower salary does not automatically come with proportionately cheaper rent.

Local tips:
- Start with Landing.jobs for Portuguese tech roles
- Many engineers in Lisbon compare local startup roles with remote UK, German, or Dutch opportunities
- Use IT Jobs Portugal and LinkedIn Jobs Lisbon when you want local-market signal

## Relocation Basics

### Housing

Rental portals, furnished apartments, founder houses, coliving, tenant basics, and practical first-home links.

Lisbon is not the secret it used to be. The weather, pace, and international crowd pulled in remote workers and founders hard, and housing now reflects that. Budget roughly €650–€1,000/mo for a room, not a self-contained flat. It can still be good value by Western European standards, but not if you arrive expecting 2019 prices.

Local tips:
- Start with Idealista, then compare furnished and mid-term options if the normal market gets slow
- Arroios and Intendente are central and multicultural; Alcântara is trendier; Marvila is up-and-coming
- Outsite and Ukio are useful soft-landing options for remote workers and founders
